International English Track
(国際英語コース)
The International English track is
the heart and soul of our SELHi I program (2004-2007). University-bound students with an
affinity for English usually enter this track. Students can learn
English through various teaching styles, interact with native English
teachers and exchange students, study abroad, enter speech contests, and/or
aim for the Liberal Arts program of a prestigious private university.
The International English track
offers unique experiences not offered in most Japanese high schools. During
the first year, students embark on a 3-week English camp in America.
During the second year, students travel to Singapore to experience an
English-speaking Asian country. Classes adopt an integrated approach to
complement the grammar and grammar-translation approach with the
communicative approach and project-based learning. As such, classes our very
communicative and task-oriented, offering many opportunities for the practical use of
English. Students also spend a Friday, English Day, studying with native
speaking Professors at our affiliated university. Monthly international
seminars are held to listen to various experts from the
international community, which have included former ambassadors, NGO/NPO
leaders, religious and regional experts, etc. There are always one or two
foreign exchange students in the class at any one time. In addition, this
diverse class includes students who are foreigners living in Japan.
Nationalities have included Americans, Australians, Brazilians, Canadians,
Chinese, Dutch, Filipinos, Indonesians, Koreans, and New Zealand Kiwi's.
The International English track is
divided into 2 sub-tracks: Study Abroad and Special English Advanced.
Study Abroad (留学特進系)
The Study Abroad option is for
students who want to experience a long-term homestay program. Students go
abroad for about 10 months during the summer of their second year. In the
past, students have visited America, Australia, Canada, England, Germany,
the Netherlands, Hungary, and South Korea. Students who come back from their
study abroad program show exceptional improvement in their English ability,
especially their confidence in communicating in English. By graduation,
students of this track have most definitely passed the 2nd grade or the
pre-1st grade of the English Proficiency Exam (英検). Some have even returned
to studying in an English-speaking overseas university (Suffolk University
in Boston, University of Oregon, Western Oregon University, York University in England, etc.)
Special English Advanced (英語特進系)
The Special English Advanced
option is for students who do not participate in a study abroad option.
Their courses of study are geared toward entering the Liberal Arts program
of a prestigious private university, with a special emphasis on English and
International Issues. Although these students do not experience the total
immersion of a study abroad program, they do have more chances to experience
classes taught by Professors at our affiliated university, innovative SELHi
classes, the 2nd year trip to Singapore, international seminars, English camps,
and rigorous academic classes in other subjects like Math, Japanese, Social
Studies, Science, etc.
Special Advanced Track
(特進コース)
The Special Advanced track is geared
toward university-bound students whose strengths are in subjects other than
English. For example, students in this track usually do well in math,
Japanese, social studies and/or science. Students are provided rigorous
academic training in all subjects. By the 2nd year, students choose the
liberal arts elective (focus on Japanese, English, Social Studies) or the
science elective (focus on Math, Sciences), depending on their individual
goals. Study camps and Saturday Study Seminars are also held to help our
students better understand all the difficult materials at their own pace.
Frontier Track
(フロンティアコース)
Our SELHi II program aims to provide an All-English
teaching style employing an integrated approach in the English classes of
this track. Generally speaking, the students of this track are not as
academic as the students of the International English and Special Advanced
track. However, the goal of the English department is to engage the students
in an interactive English-speaking environment (i) to increase their
exposure to English, (ii) to use non-traditional teaching styles, and (iii)
to have fun while learning English.
Recognizing the tough demands of today's education
requirements, the Frontier track offers a custom-tailored curriculum to help
students achieve their dreams, whether university-bound or not. As such, 2
options have been designed to better serve our children of tomorrow.
Liberal Arts (人文社会系)
Focuses on Japanese, English,
Social Studies. Geared toward students who want to go to a university,
junior college or work in areas like nursery education and social welfare.
Natural Science (自然科学系)
Focuses on Math and Science.
Geared toward students who want to pursue a future in the field of natural
sciences. Toyama is known for its pharmaceutical companies, which employ a
large number of Toyama residents. As such, students who want to study or
work in this field are encouraged to enroll in this option.
